Tips for Dressing Your kids for Santa Pictures

As a photographer specializing in family portraits, I have the privilege of witnessing the straight up awe that happens during Santa Claus mini sessions. The delight in children's eyes as they meet Santa is truly heartwarming, and dressing them in the perfect outfit adds an just an extra bit of charm to your holiday portraits. In this post, I'll share some valuable tips on how to dress your little ones for a Santa Claus mini session, helping to create the your most favorite Santa pictures ever.

Comfort is Priority

First and foremost, prioritize comfort when selecting outfits for your little ones. Santa Claus mini sessions often involve playful interactions, and you'll want your children to feel at ease and free to express themselves. Choose soft fabrics and outfits that allow for movement, ensuring your little Santas and elves are comfortable throughout the session.

Choose Playful and Coordinated Outfits

Capture the spirit of the season by opting for playful and coordinated outfits. Consider dressing your children in festive colors like red, green, or white. Coordinating doesn't necessarily mean matching perfectly; instead, focus on creating a harmonious ensemble with complementary colors and styles for a visually appealing group photo.

Layer Up for Style

Consider layering your children's outfits for both style and warmth. Cute sweaters, cardigans, or vests not only add texture and visual interest but also lend themselves to looking seasonal. While the temperature in the studio is cozy it’s also just very sweet to look wintry for your pictures with Santa.

Avoid Busy Patterns

When it comes to clothing for children, simplicity often works best. Avoid overly busy patterns that may distract from their adorable expressions. Solid colors or subtle patterns can highlight your child's personality without overwhelming the photo.

The one and only exception in my opinion is holiday pajamas. If your children are meeting Santa wearing their pjs patterns are almost unavoidable but also the themes can be really sweet for the photos.

Capture Personality with Favorite Characters

If your child has a favorite holiday character, consider incorporating elements of that character into your portrait. Whether it's a snowman, reindeer, or other beloved toy, these personal touches can make the photos even more special and reflective of your child's unique personality.

Plan for Potential Messes

Sometimes a little candy encouragement or treats can help boost smiles and fun. Kids will be kids however so sometimes that means a bit of mess during the excitement of a Santa Claus. Plan ahead by bringing dry snacks like fruit snacks. This way, you can focus on capturing the joy of the moment without worrying too much about wardrobe mishaps.

Parents, Be picture ready too

If you think your child might be unsure about meeting Santa, please be prepared to sit with your child to help them feel comfortable. In this case, one person in your family should dress to be prepared to be camera ready.
