A Guide to Planning the Perfect Photography Session for Your Toddler
Children may need time to warm up to the new environment,
so don't be discouraged if it takes a little while for
us to create the images you are planning for.
Toddlers! Who else will sing “Happy birthday” to everyone in the family one right after another? Who else can get moody teenagers to chase them around trying to catch and tickle them? Their energy is unparalleled and laughter contagious. Toddlers are so fun to photograph and while the idea of bringing a toddling little one to a studio may cause you to pause, I’m here to reassure you that there is no reason to worry.
To help you prepare for the an in studio photography session, here are some tips and suggestions:
Choose the Right Time:
Schedule the photography session during your toddler's happiest and most active time of day. Avoid times when your child typically gets tired just to help us do everything we can to plan for their best moods.
2. Bring A Comfort Item:
Bring a favorite toy or stuffed animal with you to the session, if you’d like. These items can provide comfort and familiarity, making your child feel more at ease during the session.
3. Dress Comfortably:
Dress your toddler in comfortable clothing helps them be able to focus on us instead of itchy clothing. Solid colors or simple patterns work best. Avoid clothing with large logos, characters or distracting patterns.
4. Snacks and Drinks:
Having snacks at the ready is part of keeping toddlers happy anywhere you go and this is no different at the studio. Have some snacks and drinks on hand just in case your kiddo needs a little snack break during the session. Avoid snacks that could stain clothing or cause a mess.
5. Patience and Flexibility:
There is always a tentative plan for your session. A plan that is of course flexible to the whims and moods of toddlers. Toddlers typically have a sense of what they want to do, so come with patience and be flexible with the schedule. Children may need time to warm up to the new environment, so don't be discouraged if it takes a little while for us to create the images you are planning for.
6. Communication with the Photographer:
Tell me all about it! Please share your expectations, ideas, and any specific images you are hoping for before the session at our in-home consultation. A clear understanding of your vision will help me better create images for you to love.
7. Relax and Have Fun:
The most important thing is to have fun during the session. If you're relaxed and enjoying the experience, your toddler is more likely to have a good time too, resulting in natural and beautiful photographs.
These suggestions are aimed to help you be better prepared for a successful and enjoyable studio photography session with your toddler. Keeping in mind that the ultimate goal is to make this a positive experience for your children will help us keep things light and create images for you and your family to love over a lifetime.

Annual school portraits are a tradition that really highlight your child’s growth year after year. But instead of letting them gather dust in a drawer, why not display them in an intentional and meaningful way?
