Dressing For Your Holiday Pictures

The holiday season is a time of togetherness and celebration, making it the perfect opportunity to capture special moments with your loved ones through family photos. As a studio family photographer, I've had the pleasure of working with countless families to create lasting memories. One piece of advice I always emphasize is the importance of feeling good in your clothing choices for these photos. After all, when you feel comfortable and confident, it truly shines through in your pictures. In this blog post, I'll share tips on how to dress for holiday photos while prioritizing comfort and confidence.

Coordinated Color Schemes

When planning your family's holiday photo attire, consider coordinating color schemes. This doesn't mean you all have to wear matching outfits; instead, choose a color palette that compliments each other. Rich, warm tones like deep reds, forest greens, and navy blues are popular choices for holiday photos. These colors are not only seasonally appropriate but also flattering for a wide range of skin tones.

Mix and Match Styles

Each family member has their unique style, so embrace it! The key is to ensure that the chosen outfits complement each other. If your daughter loves dresses while your son prefers dress pants and a nice shirt, that's perfectly fine. You can use accessories like scarves, suspenders, or hair accessories to tie the looks together. Mixing and matching styles can create a visually appealing and harmonious family portrait.

Consider the Location and Season

The location of your holiday photoshoot can influence your clothing choices. For an outdoor session in the β€˜ber months the weather can be a little chilly, especially on overcast days or in the shade so warm and layered outfits are essential. However, if you're having an indoor studio session, you can opt for more lightweight attire. For outdoor sessions, I check the weather forecast leading up to our session and will keep you posted on how it can affect our time together.

Texture and Layers

Adding texture and layers to your outfits can make your family photos more interesting and visually appealing. For the winter season, consider cozy sweaters, knit scarves, or faux fur vests. These elements not only add depth to your photos but also offer extra comfort in colder weather.

Personal Style and Comfort

The most important aspect of dressing for family photos is ensuring that each family member feels comfortable and confident in what they are wearing. When people feel good in what they're wearing, it shows in their expressions and body language. Encourage your family members to select clothing that reflects their personal style and makes them feel their best. The goal is to capture your family as they truly are, so don't completely discount comfort for style.

Avoid Loud Patterns and Logos

While it's essential to express your individuality through your clothing, loud, busy patterns and prominent logos can be distracting in family photos. Opt for clothing with subtle patterns or solid colors to ensure that the focus remains on your family's connections and emotions, rather than the clothing.

When it comes to dressing for holiday photos, prioritizing comfort and personal style should be at the forefront of your decision-making. A happy and confident family makes for beautiful and authentic photographs that you'll cherish for years to come. So, choose clothing that allows you to be yourselves and enjoy the moment with your loved ones. Remember, it's not just about what you wear, but how you feel in it that truly matters.
