Real connections.

Family portraits are an important annual tradition for many of us. But sometimes, something happens to some of us when we stand in front of the camera. Leading to the thoughts like “Am I being awkward?”

Even for those of us who are in front of the camera regularly can feel uncertain about how we are coming across or look. The key to a great family portrait is making sure everyone looks natural and relaxed. Here are some tips to help your family feel and look like you in your next portrait session.

 Choose the Right Location

Select a location that feels comfortable for your family. Whether it's your home, a local park, or the studio, being in a place you feel relaxed in can help everyone be themselves.

The studio may be an unfamiliar setting if you haven’t been here before but it is comfy. The temperature inside thankfully doesn't have to match the cold rainy days or the hot ones.

The studio also offers privacy. This has been perfect for individuals that would rather not be watched by the occasional passerby when in public.

Coordinate, Don't Match

Matching outfits can make your family look like a uniformed army. How many times in your everyday life do you find everyone in your family wearing the exact same white t-shirts and jeans? Instead, coordinate your clothing by choosing a color palette or style that complements each other without being identical. This allows each family member to showcase their individual personalities. People always look their best when they feel like they can be themselves.

Timing is Key

Pick a time for your portrait session when everyone is well-rested and fed. Avoid scheduling it during nap time or mealtimes to help keep everyone feeling their best.

Be Yourselves

The most important tip for looking natural in family portraits is to be yourselves. Don't try to act or pose in a way that doesn't feel like you. At the start of every session, I remind you that if a pose doesn’t feel comfortable to let me know. This is the best way to let your personalities come through in your portraits!

 Embrace Connections

Some of the best family portraits capture genuine moments between your family. Don't be afraid to laugh, joke, and play with each other during the session. I will sometimes start you in a pose but encourage you to be extra affectionate with each other. Reach out for each other's hands more often, give extra hugs. All of those small gestures will create genuine interactions and the most heartwarming photos.

Trust Your Photographer

Choose a photographer you feel comfortable with and trust their expertise.

I'll guide you through the process and help capture your family at its best. It is always my goal to show the connections between the ones you love and show those moments in your portraits.

Relax and Have Fun

Remember that a family photoshoot is also an opportunity to spend quality time together. Try to relax, have fun, and enjoy the experience. When you're enjoying yourselves, it will show in your final images.

Edit Sparingly

While editing can add some drama to your photos, my style is true to life.  I create natural-looking portraits where your family looks like the real you and not overly retouched.

Practice Patience

Sometimes, the best images happen after everyone in your family starts to warm up.  Try to enjoy the time with your family and trust the process. The perfect moment will come, and your photographer will capture it.

Family portraits should reflect the genuine love and connections within your family. By choosing a comfortable location, coordinating outfits, and embracing your unique personalities, you can ensure your family portraits are both beautiful and natural.

Remember to relax, have fun, and your love for each other will be seen in your portraits. These tips will help you create cherished memories that you can treasure for years to come.
