Whether it’s a profile picture for social media, a picture for a website, or marketing materials don’t overlook the importance of keeping your image up to date. Just like you wouldn't use an old resume, using an old image doesn’t represent who you are today. It is so important for your image to look like you do in person, so when people meet you they trust that you are who you say you are.

Headshots should look like you.

We age. We change hairstyles. Facial hair changes. And whether you fight or embrace time - they happen. The image you present to clients and potential clients will be most trustworthy when it is consistent with the person they actually meet. Building credibility begins with that first impression.

Consistency between your image and the real-life you can help build that important trust and credibility, making it easier for people to want to connect with you. When your professional headshot accurately reflects your current look and style, it feels real and honest. This really helps others to only recognize but also connect with you.

And when the “online you” matches the real you people feel know it. This sense of familiarity and reliability is the start of trust. People know when you make an effort to show the real you and they appreciate that genuineness and this will help you build actual connections, whether you're networking, interviewing, or meeting clients.

And if your headshots are more along the lines of branding photography they can tell more of your story to your clients. You can use updated images to share professional accomplishments or projects. It’s a subtle yet powerful way to communicate that you are actively engaged and progressing in your career.credit.

Get in front of that camera and do it regularly.

I can not recommend this enough. The more you are, the more comfortable you will be.  Regularly putting yourself in front of the camera (and photographer)  the more used to the experience you’ll get. Just like during a session over time it will feel more natural.

If it isn’t already, getting a headshot should be a part of your annual work life routine. A professional, up-to-date image will not only help you stand out from the crowd, it can reflect your style and commitment to work life.

Your headshot is a visual representation of who you are professionally, and it should line up with all the other ways you present yourself and your work. So, take the time to schedule your next headshot session and share your new photo on your professional profiles and networks. Your future self will thank you for it. Send me an email and we’ll get started.
